Some obsessive habits in children and how to deal with them?

According to studies, there are numerous obsessive habits that children develop at the time of their developmental years. These habits can turn out to be harmful for their oral cavity as well as their dental development. Such bad habits include: body rocking, sucking thumb, head banging, pulling their hair, fingernail biting, and picking nose.

Every homeschooling parent must understand that children get into most of these habits out of boredom, anxiety, or fatigue. Having an obsessive habit offers relief from an emotional trauma or stress.

Thumb sucking:
This is one habit that can start in infancy. As time passes and the little one matures and ages, the little one develops more understanding and self-control and leaves the habit. However, if the habit remains it could cause,

  1. Damage to the thumb or fingers in the form of calluses
  2. Flared teeth
  3. Different kinds of infections
  4. Problems with the jaw bone
It is important to see a doctor at the earliest and get the treatment started.

Nail biting:
One of the most common habits that children develop out of anxiety or boredom is nail biting. Prolonged biting may lead to,
  1. Bleeding and inflammation in the cuticle area
  2. Different infections around the fingers
  3. Chipped teeth due to constant biting
Starting a daily nail care routine, including using a moisturizer to smooth out and soften the nail skin and to prevent dryness is a good idea. Make sure you use hand lotion on your child repeatedly after hand-wash.

Lip biting:
This habit can start innocently when the child tries to smoothen chapped skin by biting on it, slowly turning habitual. When this habit prolongs it can cause,
  1. Swelling and redness on the lips
  2. Dental problems
It is best to make use of a lip balm which is child friendly to get rid of any chapped lips. Dentist experts may also offer appliances that may assist in stopping this habit.

While no homeschooling parent should worry if the oral habits do not stop even after pre-school age. But, in case the habits continue, it is extremely important to speak with an expert.
